No one needs convincing that 3D printing is a big deal. New affordable consumer printers are hitting the market every week. However, getting a quality print from your printer hinges on several factors. Here are five factors that contribute to the quality (or lack thereof) of your prints.
Material
Whether you’re printing PLA, ABS, or other compound, each material has its own guidelines. Your 3D printing model should be designed for the material it is intended to print with.
Thickness
Models with areas that are too thin for your printer/material will not print in those areas. Also, if using thin walls in your model, prepare for weak areas and general poor print quality.
Print Technology
This does not mean the printer itself, but rather how the printer makes its print. Printers may use extrusion technology or filament based fused deposition modeling. Some printers use powder selective laser sintering while others use resin. Each material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Model Quality
Low resolution STL models result in pixelated prints that are rough and geometrically shaped. On the other hand, super high resolution files may be too big for a printer to handle. The printer may not be able to print at such high quality and end up wrecking the print.
Software
Every printing software has its own caveats. Be sure to read up on the documentation and guidelines concerning 3D printing on that software platform. In short, achieving a quality 3D print is hard. It requires specific and technical knowledge about every aspect involved with your print. It may be best to hire a CAD outsourcing company to handle your 3D printing needs.
