Lidar stands for Light Detection and Ranging. It’s a remote sensing process by which light from a laser is used to take highly accurate measurements of the surface of the earth. According to ESRI, Lidar is primarily used to create highly accurate aerial maps. With Lidar, a sensor transmits a laser beam toward to the surface of the earth along a predefined survey route. The reflection is sent back to the receivers aboard the aircraft. The receivers “record the precise time from when the laser pulse left the system to when it is returned to calculate the range and distance between sensors and target.”
This process provides a highly accurate aerial mapping technique. Lidar has revolutionized terrain mapping and is increasingly used in industries as diverse as urban planning, landscape ecology, survey assessments, floodplain mapping, forest inventory and coastal engineering. Lidar offers several advantages including:
- Lidar data is collected at an extremely high sample density which allows for more accurate scan to bim outputs.
- Since Lidar uses an active illuminating sensor, data can be collected at night as well as during the daytime.
- Lidar can collect accurate elevation data in dense forested areas. This is an improvement over photogrammetry which cannot record accurate terrain data in such situations.
- Lidar data does not display the same geometric distortions as other data types.
- Lidar data can be easily integrated with other data sources.
Aerial Lidar mapping allows for a highly accurate mapping service. Whether are not Lidar will be ideal for your project depends on its size, scope and boundaries.
